Each project has its own subject and requirements. The stages below explain how a wax figure is developed from the first references to the finished piece.

Sculpting in Clay

Work begins with reference material for the subject. Depending on the project, the team may take photographs and measurements in person. Figures can also be developed from supplied photographs.

Artists build the portrait in clay by hand, using photographs and measurements to guide the likeness. Clients can review the developing model and share feedback before it moves to moulding.

The body of a wax figure can be sculpted in clay or cast from a model. Sculpted bodies are built on a metal armature. For life casting, a suitable model is cast using alginate and plaster. The body can then be produced in fibreglass for a lightweight, durable figure.

Moulding and Casting

A silicone negative mould is made from the approved clay head, capturing details in the surface. A fibreglass shell supports the mould. Warm wax is poured inside and left to cool, forming a hollow wax portrait.

Cleaning the Wax Portrait

The wax cast is cleaned and small imperfections are filled with sculpting tools. Handmade acrylic eyes are fitted and carefully set into the wax head.

Hair insertion

Human hair is tinted to match the subject, then inserted strand by strand into the wax head. This detailed stage can take around four weeks.

Colouring

Oil colour is applied in thin layers to build the skin tone. Broad washes establish the base, followed by finer detail such as freckles and moles.

The team assembles the fibreglass body, wax portrait and hands, then dresses the figure to suit the character and brief. Final adjustments bring the sculptural details and presentation together.
