A bronze portrait preserves a moment in a lasting material. BestWaxFigures creates individually modelled portraits in bronze, plaster or Jesmonite, with close attention to likeness and expression.
Reference photographs and, where practical, in-person sittings guide the sculpting process. The model is shaped by hand and refined to capture the subject's character, including subtle details such as a half-smile or the expression in the eyes.

Sitting
Portraits can be developed from photographs. Where practical, one or two in-person sittings can provide additional reference and help establish the subject's proportions and expression.
At an initial sitting, the team gathers photographs from different angles and, where useful, basic measurements. Early clay modelling helps assess the main forms against the reference material.
A further review may be arranged near the end of the modelling stage. This gives clients an opportunity to compare the clay portrait with the subject and discuss any final adjustments before moulding.
Clay Sculpture
The portrait model is built by hand in water-based clay, using the agreed photographs and measurements to shape the head and facial features.
Progress photographs allow clients to review the clay model. Any refinements are discussed before approval and the next stage.
Moulding
After approval, a negative mould is made from the clay portrait using silicone rubber and Jesmonite. The mould is used to produce a wax copy for the foundry stage.
Bronze Foundry
There are several stages in order to produce a bronze cast from a wax copy. Firstly a ceramic shell mould is made of the wax. The wax is then melted out of the mould and molten bronze poured in. The ceramic material is then chipped off the cast which is repaired and tidied up ready for colouring or patination.
The foundry makes the bronze cast from the wax model, then cleans and prepares the surface for patination. Available patina colours and finishes can be discussed as part of the project.
